Hello Kinder families,
Boy oh boy is time flying by! With just a short few weeks left of school and Open House around the corner we are busy bees in Kindergarten.
This week we will jump into learning all about butterflies!!! Last week we spent a lot of time learning about Owls. The students seemed very excited to share their learning about Owls through conversations and writings but are even more excited to talk about butterflies. So far we have learned about the red fox, black bear, frogs, and owls. This will be our last creature to study before moving into a new unit about plants.
In math, we are learning different ways to compose and decompose 10. We will also continue to review solid and flat shapes as well as telling time to the hour. Both shapes and time will be assessed next week!
Also, don't forget our upcoming field trip May 23rd! Thank you to the many parents who have signed up to attend this full day event. We will be running a few camp style stations as well as spending some time on a nature walk. It will be lots of fun and a great way to end our North American animals unit. There are a few items we are still in need of to make this camp day a success. Please visit the following site to see how you may be able to help with a few odds and ends! Just copy and paste the following link to view the supply list: http://vols.pt/QUCAqW
Lastly, we are launching off our phase one of our parking Lot campaign on May 23rd! It is most important that all students know where they are going at the end of each day. (BASE, walking, car pick up) We will be utilizing a check in system each morning within our classroom that will have each student place their magnet under the mode they will use for end of the day pick up. Please be sure to share each morning with your child how they will be going home that day so they are able to use the check in system correctly at the start of our day!
Thank you for your continued support!
Ms Newberry

Hello Kinder families,
This week we are continuing our learning about North American animals. Last week we learned about foxes. We also explored some compare and contrast strategies between foxes and bears. This week we will explore the life cycle of frogs.
Your child will be coming home with an at-home project this Monday. The project will require all students to choose a North American animal of their choice within a certain habitat (chosen by myself). They will write short facts about their animal that they will then present to the class along with some form of 3-d animal model. Please email me for any clarifying details. All projects will be due on the 16th of May.
In math we will continue learning about 3 dimensional (solid) shapes. We will also review telling time to the hour and addition. Please continue to practice all math facts each night with your child. Testing days for rocket math are Wednesday and Thursday. Please know that students should be memorizing these math facts without fingers!
This Thursday we will be having a small celebration within our classroom to celebrate Mother's Day. You are invited to join us for muffins and juice from 8:50-9:50. Students are able to bring one special person for this event (mom, grandma, aunt). Please sign up on shutterfly if you are able to make it this week. If you are unable to attend you can also write (unable to attend) in the comment section. Hope to see you all there.
Also we have an upcoming field trip day planned on the 23rd of this month. Students will explore the outdoors as we visit a local nature center and learn about the wildlife that inhabit the area. We will be looking for about 7 volunteers from each kinder class for this event . Five parents will run stations and two to help facilitate station movement or help chaperone on the nature hike. We are looking for a few dads to sign up for this one!!! More details to come! I will set up a shutterfly event for this as well to see who is potentially interested in attending. This should be lots of fun!!! Did I mention this is a great dads event :)
Last note before I sign off.... Open house is just around the corner! Please mark your calendars for May 25th. We are excited to have you all come that evening to explore the learning we will have covered!
Hope you all enjoy this upcoming week!

This week we are kicking off our 4 week unit on North American animals. Last week we spent time learning about four habitats: Ocean, Forest, Ponds, and Oceans. This week we are headed to the Folsom Zoo. It will be a great launching point to kick off our learning about various animals. If you have any books on Bears, Foxes, Owls, Frogs, and Butterflies we would love to borrow them for the next few weeks as we discover what makes these animals unique.
In Math we will be testing our knowledge on measurement. Testing will take place this Wednesday and Thursday. For the second half of our week we will transition into learning about telling time to the hour.
Journal entries from the yellow and green group were outstanding! I can't wait to read this weeks groups! Way to go parents for all the support in helping your child check their writing. Please look over the rubric that is enclosed in your child's journal to help them focus on new areas for the Spring writing entries. Red and Blue group journals will be returned this Friday!

Last week we kicked off our Community Workers unit! The students had lots of fun learning about the job of a firefighter and police officer. We also had a karate instructor come into the classroom to talk to our students. If you are interested in coming in to share about your job we would love the visit!

Hello Families,
What a great first week back from break. Although the rain made for a bit of a tricky week, overall the students did well and enjoyed lots of indoor recess. We spent some time revisiting classroom rules and procedures. Next week we will be kicking off new cafeteria procedures on the Westlake campus. We spent some time introducing these new concepts this week and our school cannot wait to implement these new procedures starting Monday the 11th!
Language Arts
Next week we will continue learning about winter and snow. We spent some time our first week back reading both fiction and non fiction books that helped us dive into the winter season. We will be reading the story called, The Mitten. Our focus will be on retelling using the language first, next, and last. You can help support retellling at home by reading books and also having your child identify these parts within the story of you choosing.
Later in the week we will focus on learning about the life and dreams of Martin Luther King Jr. We will also be focusing on the letter Jj and review of the letter Ww.
Math
In math, we have started our focus on addition. We will continue to focus on this concept in various ways using mutliple strategies to solve simple addition problems. (fingers, counters, drawings, etc)
Little Readers
Your child should have came home Friday with a new book to kick off our "litttle reader" program.
Please have your child practice reading the story each night and return the folder and book on Wednesday for testing. Your child must read the story fluently front to back without errors in order to receive a new book. Please keep this folder and book in a safe location as new books and folders will not be recreated if lost.
Also, January will be the last month that we implement literacy kits. Literacy kits did not come home this week but will resume again on Jan 15th and end February 3rd. Following President's week we will begin "at home writing journals" as part of your child's weekly home assigments. More details on this program will be coming soon!

A special thank you to all the families who donated supplies and time to help make these past 3 weeks such a fun experience for these fabulous kinders! I hope they are going home and sharing all the exitement with you.

Hello Parents,
This week we spent time wrapping up our learning about pumpkins parts and how they grow. Be sure to look for your child’s pumpkin learning in their Blue Folders next week.
We also had time to explore our leaves by observing, drawing, and measuring them. We also learned about how and why leaves change color.
We are focusing on Responsibility in the classroom. This will be the skill focus for the month. I will be looking for 4 outstanding students that exemplify that character trait. Please discuss both ways your child can show responsibility at home AND at school.
Next week
We are wrapping up the trimester! I can’t believe parent conferences are just around the corner. If you have not had a chance to sign up for a conference time please do so this weekend!
We will be conducting lots of assessments this next week. Please make sure your child is at school and arriving on time in order to ensure all testing can be done in a timely manner. Next week we will focus on learning about the 1st Thanksgiving and our families.
***NOTE there is no school on Wednesday. Please prepare to send in all Literacy Kits in on TUESDAY.
We will also be learning about the letter Ff and words she/ we.
In math we will review all numbers 11-20 and practice counting numbers by 10’s. These are both skills that will be tested next week along with all letters, sounds, and words and writing.
To help your child prepare for our writing test……They will need to recall and write the title of their favorite book. Please re-read your child’s favorite book this weekend and practice writing the title together. They will need to tell why (in words) they like the story or a part that they like. This will all be done independently so practicing this next week will be most helpful.
Also, our Thanksgiving Feast is set for the Friday (November 20th) before break. Information about your child’s doll project and feast was sent home last week. Be on the lookout for more details and sign ups on shutterfly!
Lastly, our Olympic Triathalon is a huge event here at Westlake. Raising money helps support our specialty classes that your child receives each week. We are hoping for 100% participation this year. Help your child become involved in obtaining sponsors over the next week to reach the goal of 180.00 per student.
Please join us in the fun this upcoming Friday the 13th from 12:15-2:35 as students participate in various stations for this BIG school event!
Thank you so much for your continuing support!

Hello Families
I hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween! What a busy week we had last week. With red ribbon week, 50’s day and our Pumpkin Centers.... our kinders had a fun filled week. Thank you to all the parent helpers who made last week so memorable. And boy did they love all the pumpkin goodies! Yum yum.
Be sure to check out our shutterfly page for lots of great pictures!
This Week
We will wrap up pumpkin learning and begin exploring leaves and other fall concepts. We will also be conducting lots of kindergarten testing as we wrap up our first trimester for the year. Please make sure you sign up for PTC online. Conferences will run about 25 min. And will be held the week of November 16-20th.
This week we will focus on the letter Gg and words that and his. Please make sure to practice all sight words on your child’s sight word ring. These will also be tested over the next two weeks.
In math we will focus on writing, counting and reading numbers 15-20. Please make sure to practice counting and writing numbers 0-20 with your child at home as part of your nightly routine.
Lastly, we have been having issues with LOTS of tattling in our classroom. Please spend some time this week talk to your child about ways to solve problems at school. Our goal is to have them determine what is tattling and what is not. If someone is hurt, if it is an emergency, or if something is dangerous we want them to REPORT to a teacher. Students should be trying to solve their initial problem by using their words. IF they are not successful then they need to ask for the help of an adult. Role playing problems is a great way to ensure your child knows what to do when conflict at school arises. Please stress the importance of using WORDS not HANDS :)

Hello Kinder Parents,
This week we had lots of fun learning nursery rhymes and reviewing our letters and words. We began to focus on retelling while using time order words (first/ next/ then/ last). This is an important skill that we will continue to focus on throughout the trimester.
Thank you to the parents who came in this week to help with prep work and centers! Parent participation both inside and out of the classroom is so vital and very much appreciated!
Next Week:
We will continue to learn new nursery rhymes throughout the week and work on creating a book of rhymes that your child will be able to take home and practice reading/ memorizing with your support. We will also spend some time reading and retelling the story of the Three Little Pigs. Spend time throughout the week having your child retell the story using words such as: beginning/ middle/ end or first/ next/ then/ last. To wrap up our nursery rhyme unit we will be taking our 1st FIELD TRIP to Fairy Tale Town on Thursday and the kiddos are excited!
Things to Remember:
Fairy Tale Town trip is set for this Thursday from 10:00 am to 2:00pm. Please make sure to pack a brown sack lunch for your child for the day. (Snacks will be provided)
Currently our class only has 3 fingerprinted adults for field trips which makes our groups rather large. I would like to find a few more parents who are willing to have fingerprinting done to help with future chaperoning. Our second field trip to Fog Willow is just around the corner and we need more parents!
Also, individual and class pictures will be taken the same morning as our trip and is scheduled for 8:45am. Please make sure that your child is in uniform.
Lastly, fall break will start the week of October 5th. Therefore, literacy kits will not go home Friday the 2nd. This final week before break, please remember to return your child's library books and literacy kits on Wednesday! Make sure to sign off on your child's literacy kit paperwork and check that all items are inside the bag before returning it.
Thank You!
